Better Angels

Better Angels

"To know what has come before is to be armed against despair.  If the men and women of the past, with all their flaws and limitations and ambitions and appetites, could press on through ignorance and superstition, racism and sexism, selfishness and greed, to creat a freer, stronger nation, then perhaps we too, can right wrongs and take another step toward that most enchanting and elusive of destinations:  a more perfect Union.

To do so requires innumerable acts of citizenship and private grace.  It will require, as it has in the past, the witness and the bravery of reformers who hold no office and who have no traditional power but who yearn for a better, freer way of life.  And will also require, I believe, a president of the United States with a temperamental disposition to speak to the country's hopes rather than to our fears."

Jon Meecham
from The Soul of America:  The Battle for Our Better Angels

Please Vote Today.

  1. Amen Pamela. So much is riding on today's vote. I love "private grace". Donna@gatheratthefarm

  2. I voted dearest bean! I only had about half an hour's wait in line right at 7 this morning.
yesterday evening Chris Matthews spoke to the young people who had not decided to vote because they're so busy... he said "if you have time to stand in line at Starbucks you have time to stand in line to vote!"

  3. Thank you for this quote. I cannot wait to read Meecham's book and may our "better angels" prevail today

  4. My vote today, was, and is, for America. My father, 3 uncles, my brother, and my son, all fought in wars, for the freedom we all enjoy today. No need to say who my vote was cast for, I know my choice is not yours, from reading your blog. But it is the choice that I believe has been fought for and died for, a very good choice...

  5. I voted and I loved the Soul of America book. It somehow gave me hope during this bleak time in history. Let's hope tonight will be a first step towards a return to the country ethics we all believe should be the norm.

I love to read your comments! Each and every one! Though I'm always reading your comments, I may not respond in the comment section. If you want to write me directly, you may do so at pamela@pamelaterry.net. Thank you for reading!
