My Edward

“And when he dies, turn him into stars and form a constellation in his image. His face will make the heavens so beautiful that the world will fall in love with the night and forget about the garish sun.”

My Edward
It is with great sadness that I tell you that big, sweet, magical Edward has slipped away from us.  He was diagnosed with nasal cancer only nine days ago and our hopes for a three to six month grace period was sadly not to be.  He died as he lived, by my side.

One only has to look at the name of this blog to know what a large part of my heart was owned by Edward.  A cold wind is blowing through the hole that appeared in my heart at his passing.  He was a special creature from the first time I saw him.  He was kind, knowing, cheerful and extremely devoted.  He saw me through the death of both my parents and allowed me to hide behind his exuberant charm when I first began writing in a more public fashion.  His big sweet face adorns both of my books.   I have run with him down sandy beaches and along mountain paths.  He laid across my feet as I wrote and slept next to me in my bed at night.  I can only hope that I gave him a fraction of the happiness he gave me.  I like to think that I did.

Edward was almost fourteen years old, so his death was something we knew would happen sooner than later.  But as with all deaths, we were nowhere near prepared for the grief we now feel.  We take comfort that he spent the last year as happy as ever and his illness, through grave, was brief.

Needless to say, I covet any prayers you may have lying around unsaid.  Grief is the price we pay for love.
This was a big love and now my bill is due.
Much love to you all,

Pamela

  2. Edward was truly a special dog and I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm heartbroken to hear this sad news. I have been blessed to know Edward through your blog. I lost my beloved Dudley in June and this seems to make Edward's passing inconsolable. Prayers for you, the Songwriter and Apple. πŸ’”πŸ’”πŸ’”

  6. Oh God no, Pamela. I had no idea. I cannot fathom it as my two weenies, Emmy and Sister, are my children; my life revolves around them. I am so sorry. I've told my family I want to go to dog heaven. I'll leave you with one of my favorite poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay.
    "Parrots, tortoises and redwoods live a longer life than men do;
    Men, a longer life than dogs do;
Dogs, a longer life than love does."

  9. The House Dog's Grave ( Haig , an English bulldog )

I've changed my ways a little : I cannot now
Run with you in the evenings along the shore,
Except in a kind of dream : and you, if you dream a moment,
    You see me there.

So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front door
Where I used to scratch to go out or in,
And you'd soon open; leave on the kitchen floor
    The marks of my drinking-pan.

I cannot lie by your fire as I used to do
    On the warm stone,
Nor at the foot of your bed; no, all the night through
    I lie alone.

But your kind thought has laid me less than six feet
Outside your window where firelight so often plays,
And where you sit to read -- and I fear often grieving for me --
Every night your lamplight lies on my place.

You,man and woman, live so long, it is hard
To think of you ever dying
A little dog would get tired, living so long.
I hope then when you are lying

Under the ground like me your lives will appear
As good and joyful as mine.
No, dear, that's too much hope : you are not so well cared for
    As I have been.

And never have know the passionate undivided
    Fidelities that I knew.
Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided....
But to me you were true.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.
I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love endures
To the end and far past the end. If this is my end,
I am not lonely, I am not afraid, I am still yours.

  10. I lost such a beloved heart dog last October, my terrier boy Haggis, and I can't say I'm even yet fully recovered. My heart breaks for you, as I still fall into tears when I read of others' loss of their sweet dogs. I can only say that Haggis gets stronger every day in all of my memories of our years together, and I know Edward will for you, too.

  15. What a shock. It is barely a week since you told us and we had no idea the cancer would develop so quickly. Like all Polish Lowlands his life sparkled in a home filled with love and devotion. Your writings reflected his gift of mischief and inquiry and complete trust. Edward was a good and faithful companion and guarded his flock well. There is no greater epitaph for a PON than to say he was a family fellow. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

  21. Pamela, I woke up thinking of you and Edward this morning. Memories of all the wonderful stories you shared on this blog about your best friend have been flooding back with such warmth. I lost my beloved Greyhound, Tara, a few years ago to cancer as well. We love all our dogs but the "heart dogs' take a piece of our souls with them as they pass. Sending a prayer of comfort for you today, and loving hugs to Apple, too. Much love, Rebecca (From The Tea Society)

We had to put down our siamese in July at age 16 for kidney failure-at least we had 13 months notice to say good bye to her and care for her. THe hardest thing is that you will see Edward missing where ever you go. Please don't be offend when I say this, but I will pray for you to have great memories of hima nd that the memories will ease the pain

Try not to grieve for him. As you rightly say, he was getting to be an old chap, he had a nasty illness and he didn't suffer for long. All things to be thankful for. Rest in peace Edward and be proud of the love you gave to those around you.

  30. Dear Pamela, Years ago I was invited to visit your blog through a blog list at Letters from a Hill Farm. I was new to computers and found families and a host of people and pets across the world. There was sweet Edward, Wilf and Digby, Teddy, Bailey, Maggie the cat, Daniel the Greyhound and Blue and Max. Oh and so many more beautiful family members. All the stories touched my heart. I worried and prayed and gave thanks for each and every one. I am sorry for your loss. He seemed as if he was mine when I read his adventures. That I could feel the silkyness of his coat, the weight of him at my feet. Thank you for sharing him with us, with me. You and yours and Apple are in my thoughts and prayers. Denise

  31. No,no! A thousand times NO! Dearest Pamela, thank you for your generosity. I can't count the times that you & Edward & your words & pictures have comforted me. Every time I saw his face I had to smile, no matter my troubles. And I too, know this un-console-able pain. The unguarded moment - & I'm in tears all over again for my Peg & she's been gone for 13 years. My prayers will include you now & may I share these words which have somehow helped me. It's called "Ascension", written by Colleen Corah Hitchcock :
"And if I go, while you're still here ..
Know that I live on, vibrating to a different measure..
behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me, so you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again,
    both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
    And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
    ..I will be there."
I know that you & Edward will meet again. We have been promised. With best love & thanks, DJD

Pets just have a special place in our hearts. Know that you gave Edward a very special love, and a wonderful life. 99. Dear Pamela, I am so very sorry for your loss. From reading your blog over the years I know how much you loved Edward and what a wonderful life he had with you, the Song Writer and Apple. Thank you for sharing your wonderful boy with us all through your blog.

Although it may not seem like it for ages, the hole you feel in your heart now is there for a reason – it is the place Edward will fill bit by bit in a new form, as you revisit wonderful memories of your time together. True love & energy never end, and once you have shed exactly the number of tears you need to (not one more or one less!) you will smile again whenever his name comes to mind and you will truly know that he is still with you, not in the way you first knew him but now as loving energy within your heart to guide you towards good things in the future. Edward is and will always be part of who you are.

  115. This is very sad news to hear of Edward's death. I feel like I've known him somehow from the funny and heartwarming tidbits you shared about him and Apple. Their antics in the house and yard or his being there for you as a constant companion. My heartfelt sympathies to you, the Songwriter and Apple, for your loss. I've always imagined Edward as a big gentle handsome giant.

  117. Pamela, I am just so very sorry for Edward's passing. I understand completely how much we love our dogs. I loved Edward too. After I learned how to came to have him, he seemed to have been destined to be with you, to love you as you've never been loved before. I've come to realize that is a dog's purpose. I love every single dog, all of them, but because of your beautiful writing and the books I came to know & loved big, beautiful Edward. Please know I will remember both of you in my prayers from now on. He will be waiting for you at The Rainbow Bridge, where all my beloved pets who are gone from this Earthly place are waiting for me. Sending love, Pamela, as I always will.
