The Ennui of Edward

His is a fortunate disposition, for he was born a happy dog.
Despite a precarious and rather lonely start in life, he never lost his joie de vivre, and now, ensconced as he is in the center of love itself, each day is merely another another opportunity for sharing his joy with everyone he sees.
And then comes August.
He tries, he really does, to face it bravely, to stare down his melancholy and force back his dread. But some days, it is just too much. Each morning he bounds to the door, filled with new hope.... oh, for a brisk wind, perhaps a cooler day.... but he is greeted again with the mossy air of late summer that makes his fur feel cumbersome and turns his dancing paws to lead. And so, once again, like a disappointed turtle, he pulls his head back inside the cooler house and stomps off to his fat tartan bed where he waits. And he waits. For Autumn.
But not today.
Invited into the car for an outing, he had to confess that his expectations were low, and when he sensed the car was on the expressway - the dullest road imaginable - he simply fell asleep. Upon awakening a couple of hours later, he noticed all the car windows were down, the sunroof was open, and the air through the windows had been miraculously refreshed into a cool autumnal breeze. Tentatively, he stuck his nose out the window. He could see up above him, across skies the colour of robin’s eggs, big white clouds were gamboling - their lamb-like faces shifting happy expression with every gust of cool wind. The holiday scent of the fir trees told him. He was deep in the mountains!
Who knew his people could travel from Summer to Autumn in two short hours? He did not stop to ponder this new wizardry, but bounded from the car with glee. He hiked to mountain waterfalls, graciously pulling the lady back up the steep trails like a ski rope. He ate lunch by a clear, duck-dotted lake, and ran across still green fields where the grass felt deliciously cool beneath his summer weary paws. He had his picture taken; strangers patted his furry white head. His August ennui was gone.
He slept the way home and now is not quite certain if the day really happened or was simply a dream. But no matter, he can clearly remember how good it felt to be once again in cool weather. He shall think of the day when he naps, his belief now restored.
Autumn shall indeed return to grace the wilted land!

With his sincere apologies to the Bard of Avon, Edward would like to say,
“Now was the summer of my discontent, made glorious autumn by a trip to the mountains”.

  2. What a lovely post.Lucky Edward,he looks so happy- the two boyz here have to make do with marine corps style haircuts to keep cool - we're in the mountains and it's still 40 degrees! If only the boyz could overcome their loathing of water then they could cool down in the pool!

  3. I love Edward!:)
He has the best expression on his face. I understand how he feels about the end of the summer. Not the best time of year!
Here in England we have had the worst summer ever with rain, rain and more rain...
Pamela please give Edward a big hug from me!!

  4. Archie and Dougal so agree with Edward - summer for two Westies in Australia is a long difficult affair, even if they live in a supposedly cool region. So glad Edward enjoyed his wonderful day out! Leigh

  5. Alas dear Edward had found his piece of heaven...albeit but for a few hours.
Like his restless soul there are many who have tired of the relentless heat and anxiously await the arrival of the cooler Autumn.
He looks so cute in the former post in your newly knit scarf.

  6. Bless Edward - I share his dislike of August; it is my least favourite month of the year, and then, as happened with him, something changes and I feel happy again. Although we haven't had the heat that you have - there is just 'something' about the month which drags, whatever the weather.

  11. What a delightful post Pamela. I'm definitely with Edward on this. Woke up this morning and wasn't quite sure I could meet the day with the temperature already at 30 degrees celsius and climbing. I'm exhausted ! But grateful for the excuse to slow down and take it easy. Off for a cool swim and perhaps a light lunch in the garden followed by a little siesta this afternoon...this is why we have August!

  17. Like the idea of a duck dotted lake. Poor Edward - I used to have a pug, Algy, and he could not tolerate the hot weather - he used to lie all day on the tiled floor in the kitchen looking incredibly sad. Cheer up Edward - Autumn will be here all too soon.

  18. As you know, I really think Edward is better than a person. So glad he has found momentary respite from the "Peoples Days of August." Every time I see pictures of your glorious friend I say YES to found dogs. How fortunate for all of you that Edward found your home.

  24. Does Edward feel like Jane Austen?

"What dreadful hot weather we have!
It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance."

A trip to the mountains would be a welcome respite, - lucky Edward.

  28. Edward and I both prefer the cooler autumn to the heat of summer - and our summers are nowhere near as hot as yours. I have Irish and Scottish ancestry and I love a cool, moist day. Unrelenting sun dessicates me...haha.

Glad I stumbled across your blog; will be sure to be back! Cheers, Julie

    Yes, Edward looks much revived.

  35. Isn't ennui a wonderful word - it creates so many images and your description of dear Edward's longing for cooler days fits it exactly. What a lucky dog Edward is to have such caring owners to find him a little bit of cool air to help him get through the warm days:)

  36. Edward is gorgeous and I think my Zoe would agree. She too is miserable in the NC heat.

  37. I really enjoyed that - it was like being on the day out too! We are lucky here in that we don't get that sort of tiring heat - I am relishing every minute of summer, and looking forward to autumn too.

Edward's tartan bed looks really comfy!

  38. Wonderful posting! And the cats here at Rosemary Cottage have melted in the deep dog days of summer in Dallas. Small furry puddles that can barely manage to pull themselves together for a brief burst of energy toward the food bowl! LOL! I do long for cooler breezes -- but -- best of all -- salty cool breezes!
