The Two of Us

I had left the party and wandered alone, down to the garden. Following a path where the rhododenrons linked their arms of fuschia overhead, I came to a clearing where the mock orange grew.
And that’s when I saw him, his cottonball of a tail shining diamond white in the sinking shadows of the Spring night.
We looked at each other for the longest time, the baby rabbit and I.  His pink nose twitching, his little foot tap-tapping like a card player wondering which card to play next.   The two of us, he so wild, me fairly domesticated, locking eyes in our curiousity and wonder.
I spoke to him gently but he scampered away, under the border and off into the wood.
What would he say to his family about me?
That I was so strange, far too tall, and too pale?
Or perhaps, just perhaps, that he recognized something within me - something kindred, something free.
That he wondered about the bonds that held me in my place.
That he wondered why I did not follow him.

  1. you always have the most wonderful posts! i've not met a rabbit recently, other that the 2 that were in the road on the way home recently and and braked and swerved, so they could go on breathing! lol...

Thank you for your blog - it always cheers me.

  2. I'm certain that he sensed a kindred spirit! How I love rabbits! I always see them at dusk, eating the tender grass and clover. I'll never forget the time my Russian Blue kitty carried a baby bunny like a kitten into our house and deposited it at my feet! Your blog is absolutely beautiful - I SO enjoy it...Cassandra ♥

  6. What an enchanting encounter - and how well your tale was told, as it always is.

You have profiled this artist before and I keep thinking how my new little grandchild may need one of these pictures. Your post brightened a somewhat gloomy day here in the midwest. Much thanks.

  8. Love the print and the story. I went to her shop. About Digby, I live in tick country and me and my dogs get them all the time. Such a terrible thing for Digby. I've always said I want to go to dog heaven when I die.

  11. If you HAD followed him, he might have led you down a rabbit hole, and you know what happened to that other young lady who went down a rabbit hole.

I love the rabbit in the painting. He looks so dignified and serious. I will use him for my desktop picture for a while if you don't object.

  18. Awww! We have lots of critters in our neighborhood...racoons, squirrels, opossums, lots of birds.....but not any bunnies, unless you count our neighbors pet which runs free.

Sigh....I just love the way you write.

  19. That is such a beautiful painting. I find that paintings of animals , often don't turn out very well. Even if they are technically correct, it sometimes doesn't work, but this is something else. I must go and check out the Etsy shop. Yet again, such beautiful words, Pamela. XXXX

  26. What a lovely story and painting. Thanks for sharing these!

This is the time of year when the little baby critters are out in my neck of the woods. I once played eye-tag with a baby ground squirrel for about fifteen minutes...the little guy popping out of his hole in the ground, seeing me and running back down, and then coming back up to see me again. Over and over. It was charming and moving, "connecting" with this small creature.

I think somehow the babies aren't old enough to be afraid yet; they're curious, like human babies.

  27. Your description of the encounter reminds me of a passage from the book "The King of Elfland's Daughter". Magical, as ever.
